The Early Christian carved crosses of Iona provided the Ritchies with a rich source of inspiration for their designs. The crosses which they made were often taken directly from the original remains on the Island. This can be seen the intricate carvings of St. Martin's and St. John's, which are faithful reproductions of the originals in the Abbey grounds. The simple ringed Celtic cross, which has become such a ubiquitous image for the Celtic period, was also used by the Ritchies, with one design, the "Pillow Cross" becoming synonymous with St. Columba himself.
The following crosses have been cast in Sterling Silver from the original Ritchie pieces and are hand finished in the style of the originals. Each item is hallmarked by the Edinburgh Assay Office and carries the mark MK IONA. The large crosses come on a 20" heavy weight silver chain, the smaller crosses on a medium weight 18" silver chain. If you would like a chain to a specific length please contact us and we will be happy to arrange this.
