Returning to her mother's Iona roots from Glasgow in 1997, Mhairi Killin set up a small arts & crafts studio in the village cottage, Tigh-na-Beart. Mhairi, who trained at Glasgow School of Art and the fifth generation of Macdonalds to live and work in the cottage, continued a long family tradition of making and selling arts and crafts to Iona's many visitors. In addition to her own unique artwork, Mhairi also produced a range of silver jewellery from the old Celtic designs of Iona silversmiths Alex Ritchie and family relative, Iain MacCormick.

By 2001, the cottage studio was doing so well that new premises were needed and in 2003 work began on the restoration of the Columba Steadings, a group of disused farm buildings, to provide a gallery, studio and silver workshop. The new business was named Aosdana from the old Gaelic meaning, "people of the art or craft".

Through Aosdana, Mhairi will continue to develop her fine art textiles and with the help of two newly trained craft workers will proudly maintain the tradition of Iona’s Celtic jewellery. In addition, visitors will also be able to see a new range of Iona stone jewellery, designed by Mhairi and made in the workshops. Aosdana will also be a showcase for a range of extremely talented Scottish silversmiths, giving its customers the chance to purchase work from some of the best designers in Scotland who are producing work at the cutting edge, nationally and internationally.

Three good reasons to visit Aosdana at its new home at the St. Columba Steadings, just oppostite the St. Columba Hotel on the road to the Abbey. The gallery is open daily 10 am - 5pm from Easter through till the end of October.
